Manchester City produced a scintillating attacking display to overpower newly-promoted Sunderland 5-3 in an eight-goal thriller at the Etihad Stadium. Erling Haaland led the line with a hat-trick, while Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden also got on the scoresheet for the champions.

The result maintains City's perfect start to the Premier League season and sends a statement of intent to their title rivals. For Sunderland, despite the heavy defeat, there were positives to take from their performance against the reigning champions, particularly in the second half when they scored three goals.

Haaland opened the scoring in the 12th minute, converting from close range after Kevin De Bruyne's pinpoint cross. The Norwegian added his second just seven minutes later, heading home Bernardo Silva's delivery. Sunderland pulled one back through Ross Stewart in the 28th minute, but City restored their two-goal advantage before half-time through Alvarez.

The second half continued in the same vein, with City extending their lead through Foden in the 55th minute. Sunderland refused to lie down, however, and pulled two goals back in quick succession through Anthony Patterson and Dan Neil. Haaland completed his hat-trick in the 78th minute to restore City's two-goal cushion, before Sunderland's Jack Clarke scored a late consolation.

The match was a tactical masterclass from Pep Guardiola, who set his side up to exploit the spaces behind Sunderland's high defensive line. De Bruyne was the chief architect, pulling the strings in midfield and providing a constant supply of ammunition for City's formidable attacking trio of Haaland, Alvarez, and Foden.

For Sunderland manager Michael Beale, there will be mixed emotions. On one hand, his side showed commendable spirit to score three goals against the league's best defensive record. On the other, the defensive frailties that led to City's goals will be a concern, particularly with tough fixtures against Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur on the horizon.

The victory sees City remain top of the Premier League table with a perfect 15 points from five matches. They have now scored 18 goals in these games, an average of 3.6 per match, and look every inch the champions. Sunderland, meanwhile, remain in 18th place, but will take heart from their attacking display against one of the league's elite sides.
