League Two is the fourth tier of the English football league system and the lowest of the three divisions run by the English Football League, sitting below the Championship and League One and above the National League. The division took its current name in 2004, when the EFL rebranded what had previously been the Third Division, and it has been contested by 24 professional clubs ever since. Each side plays 46 league matches across a season that runs from early August to early May. Promotion is unusually generous by English standards. The top three clubs go up automatically to League One, while the teams finishing fourth to seventh enter a play-off whose final decides a fourth promotion place. At the foot of the table the bottom two clubs are relegated to the National League.
