Elversberg’s defence, with Haberer and the young Jan-Luca Dompe both putting in excellent shifts, stood firm. When the final whistle came, it was Elversberg’s players who were celebrating a famous point.

In the context of the Bundesliga season, Schalke will see this as two points dropped against a newly-promoted side. With their superior squad and resources, they would have expected to take all three points. Reis will be demanding more from his attacking players, particularly the likes of Terodde and Rodrigo Zalazar, who need to start finding the net on a more consistent basis.

For Elversberg, this result is one that underscores their credentials as a team capable of competing at the highest level. Their organisation, work rate, and defensive solidity were all first-class. If they can maintain this level of performance, they’ll be more than capable of staying in the Bundesliga.
