The hosts raced into a 3-1 half-time lead in a first half of attacking abandon, but Augsburg refused to go quietly — two goals after the restart cut the deficit to one and set up a frantic finish.
Elversberg found the fourth goal that ultimately decided it, holding on through the closing minutes as Augsburg threw everything forward in search of an equaliser that never came.
The win is a statement of intent from the newcomers, while Augsburg's travelling support left with plenty of goals but no points from one of the games of the round.
