Real Madrid return to LaLiga action against Villarreal on 10 October with Antonio Rüdiger as the only fully available specialist centre-back in José Mourinho’s first-team squad. According to Marca, Ibrahima Konaté will not recover in time from the right-knee injury he suffered on international duty with France and will not be risked in the first game after the break.
Konaté’s absence is only half of the problem. Dean Huijsen is suspended following his red card in the derby, Raúl Asencio has undergone surgery on a stress fracture in his right shin, and Éder Militão has only recently returned to group training after a lengthy rehabilitation and is not expected to be ready for Villarreal. What was a deep pool of centre-backs in the summer has been reduced to one fit senior option in the space of a few weeks.

Tchouaméni the emergency option
The situation could force Mourinho into an emergency solution. Aurélien Tchouaméni is one of the main candidates to drop into central defence alongside Rüdiger, a role the French midfielder has already performed for Real Madrid in the past. The coaching staff could also consider other first-team players or turn to the academy if the fixture list does not allow a more considered rebuild.
Konaté, who has made seven appearances and played 630 minutes for the club this season, is the most significant loss. The French defender has been a regular since his summer arrival, and Real Madrid’s official listings show how quickly he became established in the side. Sitting him out against Villarreal is a precaution, but it is one that exposes how thin the position has become.
What it means for Villarreal
Villarreal arrive at the Bernabéu with an opportunity to test a makeshift back line. A partnership of Rüdiger and a converted midfielder lacks the minutes and the understanding of a settled pairing, and set-piece defending in particular tends to suffer when a defence is improvised. Mourinho’s week of training will be about building enough structure around Rüdiger to make the emergency solution workable.
The broader picture is a warning. With Militão still building fitness and Asencio out longer term, Real Madrid are one further injury or suspension away from fielding a defence with no specialist centre-back at all. How the club manages the return of Konaté - and how quickly Militão can be cleared - will shape the defensive picture well beyond the Villarreal game.
