San Lorenzo Went Wide All Night. Defensa Won the Middle.

San Lorenzo attempted 35 crosses and completed seven. Defensa y Justicia attempted nine, completed two, and won 3-0. The crossing column is not the story of the win — the story is why the crosses existed at all: every route through the middle was closed.

Forty-Three Clearances Against Sixteen

The duel rows are where this match was decided. Defensa won 48 duels to 41, won tackles at 72% (13 of 18) to San Lorenzo's 69% (11 of 16), and made 13 interceptions to eight. When a San Lorenzo attack did reach the final third, it met a clearance — 43 of them from Defensa against 16 going the other way. The ball came back, and came back, and never came through.

So San Lorenzo went around instead of through. Seven corners to three, 35 crosses to nine, and nine of their fifteen shots from outside the box. The territorial numbers look like pressure. The quality numbers do not: big chances three to zero for Defensa, shots inside the box 13 to 6 in the home side's favour, and expected goals 2.69 to 0.49.

The passing rows agree. San Lorenzo completed 212 passes at 74% to Defensa's 271 at 81%, and their 68% accuracy in the final third fell to Defensa's 77% — possession retained is not territory gained. Even Defensa's three errors leading to a shot cost nothing, because the shots behind them came from the areas Defensa had chosen to concede.

It Was Over by the Interval

Jeremias Lucco scored on 11 minutes, Maximiliano Porcel assisting, David Martinez made it two on 45, and David Barbona added the third at 45+3. The first-half xG read 2.16 to 0.38 with 55% of the ball to Defensa. Whatever San Lorenzo changed at the break made the second half quieter rather than closer: Defensa produced no shot on target after the interval, generated 0.53 xG to San Lorenzo's 0.11, and simply kept the door shut.

The Keeper Column Closes the Argument

San Lorenzo put five shots on target to Defensa's three and scored from none. The Defensa keeper faced 0.62 xGOT, made five saves, and finished at plus 0.62 goals prevented. The San Lorenzo keeper made no saves, faced 2.60 xGOT, and finished at minus 0.40. Both keepers' evenings describe the same match.

What It Means

Defensa move to 14th on 40 points from 27 matches, four points off the top half with a game in hand on most of it. San Lorenzo sit 20th on 33 points from 28, now four defeats in their last five. A team can win the corners, the crosses and the shot count and still lose every duel that mattered — this sheet is what that looks like.
