Paris Saint-Germain have been dealt a significant blow ahead of their Champions League meeting with Barcelona, with left-back Nuno Mendes ruled out for several weeks after suffering a tear in his left thigh. The French champions confirmed the injury on Sunday, a day after he came off in the 53rd minute of Saturday's 3-1 win at Strasbourg in Ligue 1.

The Yamal problem

The timing could hardly be worse for PSG coach Luis Enrique. Mendes would likely have been the man detailed to mark Barcelona's teenage winger Lamine Yamal in Tuesday's Champions League clash, a matchup that was set to be one of the ties of the league-phase calendar. The Portugal international's pace and recovery running made him the obvious candidate for the job; without him, Luis Enrique must find an alternative solution on the left of his defence.

A season interrupted again

Mendes had been an ever-present pillar of PSG's strong start to the campaign, which continued at Strasbourg with a 3-1 win that kept the club level on points at the top of Ligue 1. The 23-year-old has battled muscle problems before, and the latest tear means another interrupted stretch in a season where his availability was central to Luis Enrique's plans both domestically and in Europe.

The defender left the pitch at the Stade de la Meinau shortly after the hour mark had begun, with the club's medical staff subsequently confirming the thigh tear and a lay-off of several weeks. No precise return date has been set, but PSG expect him to miss the remainder of the league phase's opening stretch at minimum.

Who fills the gap

Luis Enrique must now decide between squad options to cover the left-back berth against Barcelona and in the weeks that follow. The wider significance is tactical: without Mendes, PSG lose both their best one-on-one defender and a genuine attacking outlet on that flank. Against a Barcelona side that has won nine from nine in La Liga and arrives in Paris in freescoring form, it is a gap the hosts can ill afford.
