The Betway Premiership is South Africa's 16-club top flight, founded in 1996 and better known historically as the Premier Soccer League. Orlando Pirates are the reigning champions; Mamelodi Sundowns hold the record with 15 titles.

The Betway Premiership is the top division of South African football, known through most of its history simply as the Premier Soccer League and now carrying the name of its title sponsor. Founded in 1996, it is contested by 16 clubs who each meet the others twice across a season running from August to May. The champions and runners-up go into the CAF Champions League and the third-placed side into the CAF Confederation Cup, while at the other end the bottom club is relegated directly to the Motsepe Foundation Championship and the 15th-placed team enters a promotion and relegation play-off. Orlando Pirates are the reigning champions. The Buccaneers ended Mamelodi Sundowns' eight-year grip on the trophy by taking the 2025-26 title on the final day, a first league championship since 2011-12 and their fifth of the Premiership era. Sundowns remain the record holders with 15 titles, and their meetings with Pirates and with Kaizer Chiefs are among the best-attended fixtures on the African continent, with the Soweto derby between Pirates and Chiefs the defining occasion of the domestic calendar. Stellenbosch, Sekhukhune United, Lamontville Golden Arrows, Marumo Gallants, AmaZulu, TS Galaxy, Richards Bay, Polokwane City, Durban City and Chippa United fill out a division that has grown steadily more competitive.
