Eliteserien is the top division of Norwegian men's football and the summit of the country's league system. First played in 1937 under the name Norgesserien, it has been known as Eliteserien since 2017 and is contested by 16 clubs. Because of the Nordic climate the competition follows the calendar year rather than the European autumn-to-spring cycle, starting around the end of March and finishing in late November or early December. Each club plays 30 matches in a straightforward home-and-away double round robin, with no play-off groups: the team top of the table at the close of the campaign is champion and enters Champions League qualifying, while the next-placed sides take Europa League and Conference League qualifying berths. At the other end, the bottom two clubs are relegated directly to the OBOS-ligaen, Norway's First Division, and the team finishing 14th faces a relegation play-off against second-tier opposition. Rosenborg are the record champions with 26 Eliteserien titles, a total built on their dominance through the 1990s and 2000s. Bodo/Glimt have been the defining force of the modern era, pairing domestic championships with deep European runs, while Molde, Brann, Viking, Valerenga, Lillestrom and Tromso all carry strong followings. Viking were crowned champions in 2025, a ninth national title for the Stavanger club.
