J1 League

The J1 League is the top tier of Japanese football, contested by 20 clubs and switching to an autumn-to-spring calendar from 2026-27. Kashima Antlers are the reigning and record champions with nine J.League titles.

The J1 League is the top tier of Japanese football and the flagship division of the J.League, which was founded in 1992 and staged its inaugural season in 1993. Twenty clubs compete, each playing the others home and away. The three lowest-placed sides are relegated to the J2 League, while the leading finishers take Japan's places in the AFC Champions League Elite. The 2026-27 campaign is a landmark one: after more than three decades of running through a single calendar year, the J.League has moved to a European-style autumn-to-spring calendar, so this season kicked off in August 2026 and runs through to June 2027, with a winter break from late December to mid-February. Kashima Antlers begin it as champions, having taken the 2025 title to extend their record to nine J.League championships. They face a familiar field of heavyweights including Kawasaki Frontale, Yokohama F. Marinos, Urawa Red Diamonds, Vissel Kobe, Sanfrecce Hiroshima, Gamba Osaka, Cerezo Osaka, Kyoto Sanga, FC Tokyo, Tokyo Verdy and Kashiwa Reysol, joined by promoted sides Mito HollyHock, in the top flight for the first time in the club's history, V-Varen Nagasaki and JEF United Chiba, back after a long absence.
