The Scottish League Cup, played as the Premier Sports Cup under its current sponsorship, is one of Scotland's two major knockout trophies and the first piece of domestic silverware decided each season. First contested in 1946-47, it is among the oldest national league cups in world football, and its December final at Hampden Park has a long history of producing memorable upsets. This section covers the knockout phase of the tournament. The competition begins in July with a 40-team group stage, eight groups of five made up of the SPFL clubs not involved in European competition plus invited Highland League and Lowland League sides. The eight group winners and the three best runners-up progress to the last 16, where they are joined by the five Scottish clubs playing in Europe to form a 16-team bracket. From that point it is straight knockout football: single ties settled by extra time and, if needed, a penalty shoot-out, through the quarter-finals and semi-finals to the final. Rangers hold the record with 28 League Cup wins, with Celtic the next most successful club, and Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibernian, Dundee and Dundee United all among the past champions. St Mirren are the current holders: a goal from Marcus Fraser and a Jonah Ayunga double gave the Buddies a 3-1 win over Celtic in the December 2025 final, a second League Cup for the Paisley club and their first in more than a decade.
