League One is the third tier of English football, contested by 24 clubs with two automatic promotion places, a play-off and four relegation spots. Lincoln City won the 2025-26 title.

League One is the third tier of English football and the middle division of the English Football League, created in 2004 when the Football League rebranded its divisions. Twenty-four clubs compete over a 46-game league season. The top two are promoted automatically to the Championship, the sides finishing third to sixth enter the play-offs whose Wembley final decides the third promotion place, and the bottom four drop into League Two. Alongside the league programme, clubs also enter the FA Cup, the EFL Cup and the EFL Trophy, which makes for one of the busiest calendars in European football. Lincoln City won the 2025-26 title and went up alongside Cardiff City and Bolton Wanderers. The 2026-27 division has an unusually heavyweight look about it: Leicester City, Premier League champions in 2016, and Sheffield Wednesday arrive after relegation from the Championship, joining recent top-flight names Luton Town, Huddersfield Town, Plymouth Argyle, Wigan Athletic, Barnsley, Reading, Blackpool and Oxford United.
