The Superliga is the top tier of men's club football in Denmark and the country's flagship domestic competition. Founded in 1991 to replace the old 1st Division as the championship decider, it is contested by 12 clubs across a season that runs from July to May. Its format is one of the most distinctive in Europe. In the regular season every club meets the other eleven three times, a total of 22 matches, after which the table splits in two. The top six enter the Championship Round and play for the title and European qualification, while the bottom six contest the Relegation Round, with points earned before the split carried over. Each group plays a further ten fixtures, bringing every club to 32 league games, and the two lowest-placed sides in the Relegation Round are relegated to the Danish 1st Division, with the leading second-tier clubs promoted in their place.
