Aston Villa's summer rebuild reaches an early checkpoint tonight, when Arsenal visit Villa Park in Premier League Round 2. Villa are looking for a response after a 4-0 defeat at Brighton; Arsenal opened their campaign with a 3-0 win over Coventry at the Emirates. Kick-off is 8:00pm BST.
A squad rebuilt in weeks
The bigger story is how quickly Unai Emery has had to reshape his side. Ollie Watkins has completed a move to Al-Hilal, Emiliano Martinez has joined Chelsea, and Ezri Konsa, Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne have all left Villa Park. The incomings include Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea, Leon Goretzka on a free transfer from Bayern Munich, and goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.
Jackson is the most immediate change to the attack. He arrives having previously worked under Emery at Villarreal, and gives Villa the recognised centre-forward they lacked at Brighton. Goretzka and Suzuki are also candidates to make their debuts, though nothing about the starting eleven is confirmed.
Arsenal arrive with continuity
Mikel Arteta's side come in with the settled look Villa currently lack. Arsenal won the FA Community Shield 3-0 against Manchester City before opening the league with another 3-0 result, while Villa are still absorbing a large number of arrivals and departures.
Why it matters
This is more than a routine second-round fixture for Villa. A convincing performance would be the first sign that Emery can turn a heavily rebuilt squad into a competitive one, while Arsenal have the chance to press an early advantage at the top of the table.
