Real Madrid 4-0 Málaga: Mourinho's Side Go Top of LaLiga With Three Wins From Three
Jude Bellingham, an Alfonso Herrero own goal and Kylian Mbappé put Real Madrid three up inside half an hour before Arda Güler added a stoppage-time fourth, as José Mourinho's side made it three wins from three and went top of LaLiga.

Real Madrid beat newly promoted Málaga 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday to make it three wins from three and finish the evening as sole leaders of LaLiga. Jude Bellingham struck on 19 minutes, Málaga goalkeeper Alfonso Herrero turned a Bellingham move into his own net on 26, and Kylian Mbappé made it three inside the half hour.
Arda Güler added the fourth a minute into stoppage time. The result lifted Madrid above Atlético Madrid, who had gone top on Saturday by winning 3-1 at Sevilla through an Álex Baena double and an Ademola Lookman strike. By the final whistle at the Bernabéu, José Mourinho's side were LaLiga's outright leaders at Round 3.
Mourinho's Madrid are scoring, not strangling
The caricature of a Mourinho team is a low block, a lead protected rather than extended, and a manager happier defending a one-goal margin than chasing a fourth. Three matches into his return, his Real Madrid have done the opposite. They were 3-0 up inside 30 minutes here, a start that has been reported as Madrid's fastest to that scoreline since 9 November 2019. That is a single-source claim, but it matches what the Bernabéu watched.
What changed on Sunday was the shape of the front line. Bellingham and Mbappé have often looked like two soloists working the same stretch of pitch. Here they functioned as a partnership. Bellingham's opener came from arriving late into the box rather than starting high, and another Bellingham move dragged Herrero into the error that made it 2-0. Mbappé's goal on the half hour closed a sequence that took barely eleven minutes end to end.
Mourinho also made five changes from the midweek win over Real Sociedad and got no drop-off at all. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Marc Cucurella, Antonio Rüdiger, Eduardo Camavinga and Brahim Díaz all came into the side. Cucurella, a reported £47.5m signing from Chelsea, is one of several arrivals slotting into a rebuilt defence. Rotation on that scale usually costs a team its rhythm. It cost Madrid nothing.
The caveat, and the real test
The honest qualification is the opposition. Málaga are newly promoted, were three down inside half an hour, and spent the last hour defending a scoreline rather than contesting a match. Beating a side in that position 4-0 at the Bernabéu tells you Real Madrid are sharp, well drilled and in form. It does not yet tell you how they will look against opponents who can keep the ball and force his midfield to defend for long stretches.
That examination arrives quickly. The Champions League league phase begins on 8-10 September, following the draw made at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco on Thursday 27 August: 36 clubs, eight matchdays, 144 matches, and a final at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid on Saturday 5 June 2027. Mourinho's first spell in charge, from 2010 to 2013, brought a LaLiga title, a Copa del Rey and a Supercopa. He is back on a multi-year deal, appointed on 11 June and starting work on 13 July after leaving Benfica to replace Álvaro Arbeloa.
Three games, three wins and three goals inside half an hour: Mourinho has hit the ground running. But the fixture list says we will not really know what this Real Madrid is until September.— OneLightScore Analysis

What happens next
Madrid's most immediate business is off the pitch. The summer transfer window closes on Tuesday 1 September 2026 at 23:00 BST, harmonised across the Premier League, EFL, LaLiga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1, so any late arrival or departure has to be done within 48 hours of the final whistle here. After that comes an international break, and then the stretch of season on which Mourinho's return will really be judged.
Arda Güler's stoppage-time goal was a neat coda to the afternoon. He was named UEFA's Champions League Revelation of the Season for 2025/26, and the competition that made his name restarts in a little over a week.
