Manchester United 5–2 Ipswich Town: Bruno Fernandes Hat-Trick Delivers Carrick's First Win of 2026/27

Bruno Fernandes answered his critics in the most direct way available to a captain. Manchester United's skipper scored three and set up another as United beat Ipswich Town 5–2 at Old Trafford on Sunday, taking their first win — and their first goal — of the 2026/27 Premier League season. It was his first Premier League hat-trick in five years.

United had been beaten 2–0 at newly promoted Hull City on 22 August, a defeat that gave Hull their first ever Premier League win over United and left Michael Carrick's side pointless after Matchweek 1. Leif Davis put Ipswich in front here on 29 minutes. From the moment Fernandes equalised on 40, the game changed shape completely.

The captain's answer after Hull

Fernandes had taken heavy criticism after the Hull defeat, and Carrick had backed him publicly in the days that followed. What arrived at Old Trafford was the kind of individual performance that closes an argument for a week: three goals, one assist and eight shots, equalling his own personal best for a Premier League match.

The three goals came in the space of 16 minutes either side of the interval. He levelled on 40, converted from the penalty spot on 50 after Matheus Cunha had won the kick, and completed the treble on 56. Eleven minutes later he turned provider, releasing Bryan Mbeumo for United's fifth on 67. In all, United scored four times in the 20 minutes between the 47th minute and the 67th.

It was only his second hat-trick in the English top flight, and the coincidence is a neat one: both have come in United's first home league game of a season, the other against Leeds United in 2021/22. The broader pattern is just as striking. Fernandes has 17 goal involvements — eight goals and nine assists — in his last 15 Premier League appearances against newly promoted sides, and the bottom of the division has repeatedly been where he does his heaviest damage.

A club record, and a miserable afternoon for Jacob Greaves

Two minutes into the second half, Jacob Greaves turned the ball into his own net to put United in front for the first time. Three minutes later it was Greaves who conceded the penalty — won by Cunha — that Fernandes tucked away for 3–1. That double punishment left the Ipswich defender in strange company: he is only the second visiting player to score an own goal and concede a penalty at Old Trafford in the Premier League, after Jan Bednarek in February 2021.

The own goal carried a second footnote. It took Manchester United to 80 own goals benefited from in Premier League history — a competition record, and a reminder that three decades near the top of a division produce their own peculiar statistics.

Ipswich were not without a response. Gary O'Neil's side had led through Davis, and Chuba Akpom pulled a goal back in the third minute of stoppage time, though by then the afternoon had long been settled. For Carrick, who made four changes from the side beaten at Hull, the reaction he had asked for arrived in a 20-minute burst rather than across the full 90.

Three goals and an assist end an argument for a week. They do not answer the harder question — whether Manchester United can do this to a side that is not among the division's weakest.— OneLightScore Analysis

What happens next

The summer transfer window closes on Tuesday 1 September at 23:00 BST, harmonised this year across the Premier League, the EFL and Europe's other major leagues. United have barely two days left to finish their business, and the shape of the squad Carrick carries into September will be decided by Tuesday night rather than by anything that happened on Sunday afternoon.

The honest caveat sits right beside the scoreline. Ipswich look likely to be among the weakest sides in the division this season, and United came into the game off a 2–0 defeat at a promoted club that had never beaten them in the Premier League before. Carrick was appointed permanently in May 2026 on a deal running to 2028, after winning 11 of his 16 matches as interim manager, and that record is what buys him room to treat this as a start rather than a rescue. One afternoon does not settle very much. It does, at least, stop the bleeding.
