Espanyol 1-3 Elche: Visitors stun RCDE Stadium with clinical counter-attacking

Elche produced a stunning away performance to defeat Espanyol 3-1 at the RCDE Stadium, with a masterclass in counter-attacking football securing all three points for the visitors.

The result moves Elche out of the relegation zone and piles pressure on Espanyol manager Luis García, whose side have now won just once in their last seven LaLiga matches.

Elche hit on the break

Elche’s game plan was clear from the start: absorb Espanyol’s pressure and hit them on the counter. The visitors executed this to perfection, with their pace on the wings causing Espanyol’s full-backs problems throughout.

The opening goal came against the run of play in the 18th minute. Espanyol had dominated possession but were caught napping when Elche won the ball in their own half. A rapid transition saw Ezequiel Ávila release Fidel Chaves down the right, and the winger’s low cross was converted by Pere Milla at the near post.

Espanyol responded well and equalized in the 28th minute through Javi Puado, who fired home from the edge of the area after a neat one-two with César Montes. The goal seemed to settle the hosts, but Elche had other ideas.

Two goals in three second-half minutes effectively decided the contest. In the 55th minute, Tete Morente pounced on a defensive error to restore Elche’s lead, slotting past Joan García after the Espanyol keeper had raced off his line. Then, in the 58th minute, Milla grabbed his second of the game, heading home from a corner to make it 3-1.

Espanyol’s possession without penetration

Espanyol enjoyed 72% possession but created remarkably little with it. Elche’s defensive shape was disciplined and compact, with the midfield duo of Raúl Guti and Gonçalo Oliveira excellent at breaking up play and launching counters.

Manager Luis García made attacking changes in the second half, introducing Martín de Rón and José Callejón, but Elche’s resilience never wavered. The visitors could have added a fourth late on when Morente was denied by a smart save from García.

The defeat leaves Espanyol in 15th place, just three points above the relegation zone. For Elche, the victory provides breathing space and a platform to build on. For García, the questions will focus on why his side struggle to convert possession into chances.
