Elversberg 4-3 Augsburg: seven-goal thriller defies the shot map in the Kaiserlinde

Elversberg won a wild 4-3 encounter against Augsburg at the Waldstadion Kaiserlinde, converting four open-play chances against a visiting side that scored three penalties yet still left empty-handed. The result lifts Elversberg to sixth on 10 points, into the European places, while Augsburg stay 10th on 8 after a defeat they will struggle to explain from the statistics alone.

How the match unfolded

The game was chaos from the fourth minute, when Elversberg’s Petkov had a penalty saved and then swept home the rebound to open the scoring. Three minutes later Luca Gunther made it 2-0, set up by Mika Krattenmacher, and when Marius Rohr added a third on 28 minutes from Florian Keidel’s pass, the hosts were 3-0 up and the contest looked done inside half an hour.

Augsburg’s route back came almost entirely from the spot. Fabian Rieder converted a penalty on the stroke of half-time, Marco Gregoritsch repeated the trick on 76 minutes, and a third penalty on 87 minutes — this one converted without a name attached in the official sheet — suddenly made it 4-3 with minutes to play.

In between, Elversberg had kept their noses in front the hard way. Filipp Schmahl struck what proved the decisive goal on 89 minutes, assisted by Petkov, stretching the lead to two at the moment Augsburg’s comeback looked most likely to be completed. Komur’s goal in the 90th minute, assisted by Behrens, set up a finale of pure tension.

What the result means

StandingsSee the full live table

The underlying numbers make Elversberg’s win look almost heretical. Augsburg registered 3.31 expected goals to the hosts’ 2.81, had 60 percent of possession, out-shot Elversberg 29 to 19 and won the corner count 12 to 4. Elversberg’s finishing, and Augsburg’s inability to score from open play, decided a game the visitors dominated in every column except the one that matters.

For Elversberg, promoted and fearless, sixth place after six rounds — three wins, a draw and ten goals — is the strongest statement yet that their top-flight stay can be more than survival. The Conference League qualification slot they currently occupy will be claimed and surrendered many times before May, but the club has never had a season that offered the question.

Augsburg, with the joint-third-best attack in the league and a defence that keeps giving games away, now sit 10th with a fixture list that will not forgive these habits. A team that scores three away and loses is a team with a structural problem, not a finishing one.
