Chelsea captain Reece James is nursing a hamstring injury, but the early indication is a low-grade problem, with the full-back targeting a return when club football resumes after the international break.

James picked up the injury in the build-up to Chelsea's defeat by Brentford before the break, the latest in a grim repetition of the hamstring troubles that have punctuated his career. Reports this week suggest the damage is a small one, and the three-week pause in the calendar has arrived at a useful moment for a player whose durability is always the first question.

October 10 return in sight

The suggested timeline would give James around three and a half weeks of recovery by the time Chelsea reconvene, an adequate window for a low-grade hamstring strain. That puts the October 10 meeting with Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge squarely in range, with Xabi Alonso hoping to welcome back a cluster of marginal fitness cases for Marco Rose's side.

A crowded treatment room

James is not alone in the race to be fit. Joao Pedro is the one major doubt for the Bournemouth game after a knee injury kept him out of the Brentford defeat, with talk of a three-to-four week lay-off putting him right on the borderline. Cole Palmer, meanwhile, withdrew from England's Nations League squad with the discomfort that has dogged his season, one of five players to pull out of Thomas Tuchel's original group.

Chelsea were without five players for the loss to Brentford, a defeat that stung but also arrived at the last possible moment before a break that offers their walking wounded a genuine run at recovery. The club will confirm James's status in their medical update ahead of the Bournemouth fixture.
