Real Madrid Confirm Mbappé Knee Hyperextension: Two Weeks Out, Clásico in Sight

Real Madrid have confirmed that Kylian Mbappé suffered a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee while on international duty, with the club captain expected to be sidelined for around two weeks — a timeline that rules him out of France’s remaining Nations League fixtures but keeps the Clásico on October 25 within reach.

"Following tests carried out today by Real Madrid’s medical department on our player Kylian Mbappé, he has been diagnosed with a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee," the Spanish club said in a statement on Saturday, a day after the striker pulled up immediately after scoring the only goal of France’s 1-0 win in Türkiye — Zinédine Zidane’s first match in charge.

Two weeks out, Clásico in sight

Real Madrid did not publish an official return date, but club sources told Spanish journalist Arancha Rodríguez that the forward is expected to miss around two weeks. Spanish daily AS went further, reporting that Mbappé should certainly be ready for the Clásico against Barcelona at the end of October — the most reassuring reading of a scan that could have been far worse.

The setback interrupts the sharpest start of Mbappé’s Madrid career. His six goals in the first five LaLiga matches of the season make him the first player to score that many in the club’s opening five league games since Karim Benzema in 2021-22.

What Mbappé misses

France will not take any risks with their captain. Zidane confirmed Mbappé will play no part in the three Nations League matches scheduled over the next ten days: France travel to Belgium on Monday before hosting Italy and Belgium at the Stade de France on October 2 and 5. Mbappé had already left the squad and flown back to Madrid for tests after Friday’s win in Kocaeli.

Real Madrid’s run-in to the Clásico

For Madrid, the fixture list offers some protection. The international break means their next match is not until Villarreal visit on October 10 — a game that may come too soon for Mbappé’s return. Roma then arrive in the Champions League four days later, before Sevilla travel to the Bernabéu the following weekend and the Clásico closes the month.

The bigger worry for José Mourinho is the state of the treatment room his captain rejoins. Ibrahima Konaté returned from the same France camp with a collateral ligament injury, while captain Federico Valverde is still working back from an ankle problem that has kept him out for several weeks. Madrid’s medical staff will now manage Mbappé on a week-by-week basis, with the Villarreal game treated as an early checkpoint rather than a target.
