Leeds without Rodon for 10 weeks as Chelsea cup tie arrives
Daniel Farke's own assessment — not a medical bulletin — puts the defender out until November at worst, with Bard and Justin named as the depth options for the reshuffle that starts at Stamford Bridge.

Leeds United go to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night without the centre-back Daniel Farke calls a key player. Joe Rodon's hamstring injury has been assessed at eight to 10 weeks — the manager's own estimate, not a club medical bulletin — which at its outer end keeps him out until November and rules him straight out of the EFL Cup third-round tie at Chelsea.
The Wales international, 28, was forced off after 34 minutes of Leeds' 1-1 Premier League draw at Brentford, and Farke confirmed the scale of the damage at his press conference on 3 September 2026.
An Eight-to-Ten-Week Absence
Yes bad news. Joe has a hamstring injury. He will be out for, at the moment, an assessment of eight to 10 weeks so he will definitely not play before the next international break.— Daniel Farke, Leeds United manager, 3 September 2026
Farke then pushed the realistic return later still — "probably not the first games after the international break" either, he added — and called the loss what it is: "a big blow for us because he is a key player for us." No return date exists beyond that assessment; Leeds have issued no medical bulletin, and whether the injury needs surgery has not been addressed publicly.
Nor did the manager pretend the replacement question is settled. His own framing put Melvin Bard's role at wing-back and James Justin's ability to cover centrally into the calculation — depth options rather than a named successor — and that is the true shape of Leeds' problem: the absence removes their most settled defensive combination, not just one name from a team sheet.
Wednesday at Stamford Bridge
The first test of the reshuffled back line could hardly be less forgiving. Leeds visit Chelsea in the EFL Cup third round on Wednesday 9 September 2026, kicking off at 20:00 BST (15:00 ET), four days after drawing 1-1 at Brighton — one competitive fixture's worth of rehearsal for a defence Farke now needs for the next two months, away at a side that presses high and attacks precisely the space Rodon usually patrols.
The timeline stretches across the new extended international window later this month too, so the matches Rodon misses stack up on both sides of the pause. For a promoted club, that is the least forgiving stretch of the calendar to defend with an unrehearsed back line — and by the time he is back, November's fixtures will be asking different questions of a defence that has had two months to become somebody else's.
