Iraola: Barcola cramp only, Gakpo 50-50 for Fulham

Andoni Iraola told the post-match press conference it was cramp, not an injury. Cody Gakpo, who missed the tie with adductor niggles, is 50-50 for Fulham at Anfield at 15:00 BST on Saturday 12 September.

The France winger had just made his first start since a late summer move from Paris Saint-Germain. He had 30 minutes off the bench at Ipswich on Friday. Before that, his last senior minutes were the World Cup third-place play-off.

Sixty minutes, then the answer

Iraola was asked the obvious question in the room after the final whistle. BBC Sport and RTÉ both carried the same line from that press conference.

He put the substitution in the context of a player still being built back up. Barcola had no pre-season minutes at PSG. "We haven't really known until now how much he can play," Iraola said, per BBC Sport. "He played 30 minutes the other day. There were some question marks around how many minutes he could give us this match, and we probably know the answer now."

The Athletic and the Evening Standard recorded the same diagnosis. Milos Kerkez also needed late treatment. Iraola grouped both under fatigue: they had cramped because they had given everything, not because something had broken.

Gakpo is the Saturday call

The tighter call is the other forward. Gakpo was left out of the Atletico squad. Iraola rated him 50-50 for Fulham and refused to dress the niggle as a long layoff.

"He doesn't have a proper injury in terms of it being bad, but he did finish the last game with niggles in both of his adductors," he said on Wednesday, as reported by BBC Sport. "We expected to have him for this match but it hasn't been possible. It isn't a big thing, but the problem is we play here again in two and a half days."

That is the calendar talking, not a medical bulletin. Fulham arrive on Saturday afternoon. A Carabao Cup tie with Tottenham is listed for Tuesday 15 September. Iraola named Rio Ngumoha and Victor Munoz as the minutes already used when the front line thinned on Wednesday. He did not name a Fulham XI.

The club's last availability note from this desk, filed on 8 September before kick-off, listed five absentees for the Atletico night and put the first of those returns after the international break.
