England's first Nations League window of the season has been hit before a ball is kicked. Cole Palmer, Marcus Rashford, Declan Rice, Tino Livramento and Kobbie Mainoo all withdrew from Thomas Tuchel's squad on Monday, each ruled out by injury ahead of the meeting with world champions Spain on Saturday, followed by Croatia and a double-header with the Czech Republic.

The Football Association did not specify the nature of the problems, describing them only as unspecified injury issues, but the scale of the exodus is the story. Only two replacements were summoned: Everton midfielder James Garner and Nottingham Forest playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White.

The Palmer blow lands hardest

Palmer's withdrawal is the most pointed. Tuchel said last week that the Chelsea playmaker had "a point to prove" after his high-profile absence from the World Cup squad that reached the semifinals before losing to Argentina. The recall was meant to be the platform. Instead, Palmer's next stop is the treatment room, having played the full game in Chelsea's 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday.

Declan Rice's absence robs England of their midfield anchor for the ties that will define the group, while Newcastle full-back Livramento and Manchester United's Mainoo were in line for meaningful minutes in a squad being reshaped after the World Cup cycle. Rashford, another recall chasing a restart, now waits for the next window.

What it means for Tuchel

Five bodies out and only two in means Tuchel must solve the Spain game with a threadbare group. Garner and Gibbs-White arrive as the beneficiaries — both rewarded by Premier League form — but the call-ups also telegraph where England are thin. The midfield that faces Spain will be an improvised one.

For the clubs, the timing cuts both ways. Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United get their players back for treatment during the international break, but none will have wanted their assets travelling and sitting unused. The fitness calls that decided this squad sheet will now decide several club team sheets when domestic football resumes.

England's availability picture will be re-assessed before Saturday's opener, with further updates expected from the camp as the week progresses.
