Sunderland are bracing for a significant absence after defender Dan Ballard suffered a hamstring injury while on international duty with Northern Ireland, with fresh reports suggesting the centre-back could be out for months rather than weeks.

Ballard pulled up in added time during Northern Ireland's 1-0 UEFA Nations League victory over Georgia in Tbilisi and left the Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena on crutches. The 27-year-old has already returned to Wearside, where Sunderland's medical staff are due to assess the full extent of the problem once scan results are processed.

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill has ruled the defender out of the remainder of the current international window, including the meeting with Hungary, the trip to Ukraine and the return fixture against Georgia. O'Neill struck a hopeful tone about the defender's overall prognosis, suggesting Ballard could be back in contention by the November international fixtures.

Despite that encouragement, concern is mounting on Wearside. Ballard has completed the full 90 minutes in all five of Sunderland's Premier League games this season and has also featured off the bench in the club's Europa League campaign. His physical presence has been central to Sunderland's defensive record — the centre-back ranks among the leading players in the division for both overall and aerial duels won in the opening weeks of the campaign.

Sunderland have already lost striker Brian Brobbey to a suspected hamstring injury suffered with the Netherlands during the same window, compounding a difficult international break for the club. Le Bris now faces the prospect of reshaping his back line for the resumption of league action on 10 October, with club football paused until after the international programme concludes.

What comes next

Ballard's importance to Northern Ireland is equally pronounced. Since the start of the 2024 Nations League, O'Neill's side have played 21 internationals but Ballard has featured in just ten of them, a luckless run the manager was quick to acknowledge. "We've not had enough of him, that's nobody's fault," O'Neill said. "It's just the nature of football and the unfortunate nature of being injured."
