Cologne have lost both of their senior strikers in the space of ten minutes. Thijs Dallinga suffered a cruciate-ligament injury in Saturday's international-break friendly against city rivals Viktoria Köln and will be sidelined for several months, the club confirmed on Saturday evening. Ragnar Ache, who replaced Dallinga in the 35th minute, then picked up a thigh muscle injury and did not reappear for the second half of the 2-2 draw.
A cruel afternoon in a stopgap fixture
Dallinga's knee buckled in a penalty-area collision and he had to be helped from the pitch. Ache's exit was quieter but no less damaging for a squad that now has no established centre-forward. Head coach René Wagner had been rotating the two, with the option of using them together — a possibility that has now disappeared for the foreseeable future.
The injury interrupts what had been a genuinely encouraging start. Dallinga, on loan from Bologna, scored twice off the bench against Hoffenheim on his league debut and had become a legitimate rival to Ache for the starting spot, even after a missed penalty in the draw with Werder Bremen. Ache, 28, grew into one of Cologne's most dependable attackers over the past year after a slow settling-in period.
Bülter and a rethought attack
Marius Bülter, who scored Cologne's equaliser on Saturday, is the obvious short-term solution. The 33-year-old has extensive Bundesliga experience through the middle and from wide positions, but Wagner may have to reshape the attack altogether until there is clarity on Ache's recovery. The fixture list gives him no grace period: Cologne come out of the break with the Rhine derby against Borussia Mönchengladbach on October 11, followed by Eintracht Frankfurt and promoted Schalke 04, plus a DFB-Pokal tie with Union Berlin later in the month.
Dallinga's absence, the club made clear, will be measured in months. How Cologne score goals until he or Ache returns is now the defining question of their autumn.
