Caicedo unlikely for Leeds as Chelsea target Hull return

Xabi Alonso admits Chelsea brought their midfielder back too early once already — so Wednesday's cup tie looks too soon, and Saturday's visit of Hull is the realistic target.

Caicedo unlikely for Leeds as Chelsea target Hull return

Moises Caicedo is running out of time to make Wednesday. The Chelsea midfielder's knock is not expected to clear before the EFL Cup third-round tie against Leeds United at Stamford Bridge on 9 September 2026 (20:00 BST / 15:00 ET), and the club's realistic target is now Saturday's home league match against Hull City on 12 September — a timeline shaped by his manager's own admission that Chelsea have rushed him once already this season.

Caicedo missed the first two games of the campaign, was brought off the bench against Brighton, and lasted 14 minutes before being forced back off. A late fitness test could not get him into Sunday's squad at Arsenal either. Afterwards, Xabi Alonso did something managers rarely do with a fitness call: he took the blame for the setback.

Probably last week, we took him too early, and I don't want to make the same mistake.Xabi Alonso, after Chelsea's 2-1 defeat at Arsenal on 6 September

The Mistake Alonso Will Not Repeat

That sentence explains the whole week. A manager who has publicly owned a rushed return cannot rush the next one, which is why a cup tie three days after the admission looks beyond Caicedo even if he trains. The 14 minutes at Brighton turned a knock into a relapse; the lesson Chelsea have drawn is that the second return has to be the last one. No club medical bulletin has been issued — the timeline here is the manager's word and the reporting around it, and neither puts him in Wednesday's squad.

Caicedo is not the only absence being managed toward the weekend. Marco Palestra, out since a training knock in pre-season, is also not expected for the Leeds tie and is working toward the Hull match. Jordan Henderson — who broke his wrist celebrating England's World Cup win in the summer — returned to first-team training on 4 September, with Alonso saying he is "getting closer and closer to playing time", though his return carries no fixed date.

What Wednesday Now Looks Like

The knock-on effect lands on the cup team. Chelsea meet a Leeds side that has defensive problems of its own — Joe Rodon is out for eight to ten weeks — but Alonso will have to find a midfield without his most important ball-winner for at least one more match, three days after losing at Arsenal. The reward for patience is a run of it: get the reshuffle through Wednesday, and Caicedo's targeted return against Hull comes with three days' more healing instead of none.

Chelsea Availability
