Borussia Dortmund have extended the contract of head coach Niko Kovač through June 2029, rewarding the 54-year-old for the most consistent stretch of results the club has produced from any dugout. The announcement came on Tuesday, ahead of Dortmund's Champions League trip to Bodø/Glimt — a fixture that is itself a measure of how far the team has come under his leadership.

From Eleventh to Second in Eighteen Months

Kovač took over in January 2025 with Dortmund eleventh in the Bundesliga. He steered them to fourth and Champions League qualification that spring, led them to second place last season, and has opened the current campaign with four wins from five league games following a summer of significant squad change. Across his tenure, Dortmund's 2.15 points per game in the Bundesliga is the best record of any coach to lead the club.

What the Club Said

"We've been on a very good path with Niko Kovač since he took office a little over a year and a half ago," said managing director for sport Lars Ricken, describing the extension as "a clear sign of continuity and stability at Borussia Dortmund" and praising a coach who "has consistently developed the team and enjoys great acceptance within our club." Sports director Ole Book pointed to a working relationship built on near-daily contact: "We are in touch almost every day and are working on taking the next steps for success with the team."

The Backroom Deal

The extension is not a one-man affair. Dortmund also renewed the contracts of Kovač's brother and assistant Robert Kovač and of fellow assistant Filip Tapalović, keeping the coaching structure intact as the squad turns over.

Where Kovač Fits

The Berlin-born Croatian made his name at Eintracht Frankfurt, winning the 2018 German Cup final against Bayern Munich, then completed a league-and-cup double at Bayern the following season before spells at Monaco and Wolfsburg. At Dortmund he has done what his predecessors could not: marry results with stability, in a job that had chewed through coaches since the golden era ended. The message of a deal running to 2029 is that the club believes the next step — a genuine title challenge — is closer with him than without him.
