Baum screenshots the table as Augsburg go top for first time

Manuel Baum ended the biggest night in FC Augsburg's Bundesliga history by reaching for his phone. His side had just come from a goal down to win 4-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday 6 September 2026, and for the first time since they joined the top flight, Augsburg sat above every other club in Germany.

Speaking at his post-match press conference in Frankfurt, the head coach did not reach for a grand statement to mark it. He reached for something smaller, and it said more.

Read the second sentence twice. "Good enough for today" is a coach filing a historic evening under souvenirs and moving on before the press room had emptied — the phrasing of a man determined that two matchdays of history should not be mistaken for a season of it. Managers who talk titles in September tend to regret it; Baum took a photo instead.

Two Halves, and Ten More Minutes

He was just as unsentimental about how the night actually went. "I think we really saw two completely different halves," Baum admitted, and the first belonged entirely to Frankfurt: Jonathan Burkardt scored early, the hosts pressed for more, and Baum said his side could "thank Finn Dahmen" that the deficit was only 0-1 at the break — the goalkeeper finished the night with seven saves.

The interval brought patience rather than panic. "We talked about it at halftime and committed to just another ten minutes in the [existing] constellation," he explained. The ten minutes were never needed: his two tens swapped sides, the match flipped within two minutes of the restart, and all four Augsburg goals arrived after the break — with 20-year-old Bayern Munich loanee Arijon Ibrahimović in the middle of the burst on his debut and Robin Fellhauer scoring in the 47th.

A Bench Built for the Top

If the switch started the comeback, Baum kept redirecting the credit somewhere less glamorous: the depth behind it. "What I find increasingly important these days is that one has a super bench," he said. "What we can bring with five new additions from the bench is really good." The evidence arrived in real time — Alexis Claude-Maurice came on in the 61st minute and scored in the 65th.

Two matchdays in, Augsburg have six points, seven goals scored and one conceded, and a league table no Augsburg side has ever led before. What they do not have, on their coach's telling, is any intention of talking about it — the screenshot is saved, the table will change, and the next matchday will ask the question the press room could not: whether the bench that turned Frankfurt over can keep a club this high for more than a photograph.
