Musiala returns off the bench as Bayern manage his minutes

Jamal Musiala is back. The Bayern Munich midfielder, sidelined since two pre-season collapses caused by absence seizures linked to a neurological condition, played roughly half an hour off the bench in Saturday's 0-0 Bundesliga draw at Schalke 04 on 5 September 2026 — his first competitive appearance of the season, with no date yet attached to a first start.

Bayern dropped their first league points of the campaign to a promoted side, and in Germany that was still the second story of the night. The first was the substitution.

Jamal came before the team, and after the summer Bayern have had, it reads less like courtesy than policy: the player's recovery sets the pace, and the fixture list waits. What followed on Saturday matched the wording — a place on the bench, a measured half-hour, nothing forced.

How quickly the minutes now rise is the open question. Bild reports that Bayern have drawn up a plan to increase his playing time in stages; the club has not confirmed any such plan, and nobody in Munich has attached a date to a first start or a full ninety. Beyond what Bayern themselves made public in pre-season, no medical detail is on the record.

Bayern's next league fixture arrives before the extended international window shuts European club football down later this month. Whether Musiala's half-hour becomes an hour before that pause is a call for Kompany and the medical staff — and on the evidence of his manager's phrasing, it will be made in exactly that order: Jamal first, then the team.
