Newcastle and Bournemouth shared four goals at St. James' Park, but the shot sheet did not look like a home salvage job. Bournemouth carried 1.51 expected goals and 16 attempts; Newcastle managed 0.65 xG from seven shots and still finished 2-2.
Key Numbers
Scoreline: Newcastle 2-2 Bournemouth (1-2 at half-time). Possession 58%-42% in Newcastle's favour. Total shots 7-16, shots on target 2-5, big chances 1-2, corners 4-3. Pass completion 82% (349/427) versus 77% (239/311). Yellow cards 2-2.
The xG gap is the story. Bournemouth more than doubled Newcastle's chance quality and more than doubled their shot volume, yet left Tyneside with a point rather than three.
Tactical Reading
Both sides started in a 4-2-3-1. Marcus Tavernier put Bournemouth ahead in the ninth minute. An own goal credited to Malick Thiaw made it 2-0 on 35 minutes before Harvey Barnes, assisted by Lewis Hall, pulled one back two minutes later.
Newcastle's second-half response was about personnel more than territorial control. Joe Willock and Lewis Miley made way on 63 minutes for Fernandez-Pardo and Jacob Ramsey. Ramsey scored the 88th-minute equaliser. Bournemouth still finished with more shots and more xG after Cook and Brooks replaced Adams and Kluivert.
Newcastle kept the ball (58%) without creating a matching chance profile. Seven shots and a single big chance is a thin home return. Bournemouth's 4-2-3-1, with Evanilson through the middle and Kluivert and Tavernier in the half-spaces, repeatedly found shooting positions.
Standout Performers
Marcus Tavernier opened the scoring. Harvey Barnes supplied the first reply and Lewis Hall the assist. Jacob Ramsey, on as a 63rd-minute substitute, produced the late equaliser that flipped the narrative of the xG table.
Bournemouth's five shots on target against two underlines how often they asked questions of Hornicek. Newcastle's finishing (two goals from 0.65 xG) ran hot; Bournemouth's (two goals from 1.51 xG, one an own goal) ran cold.
What It Means
Newcastle sit sixth on five points from three games after the draw. Bournemouth are 14th on two points. Sixteen shots and 1.51 xG away to a top-half side is a process win even if the scoreboard was not.
For Matthias Jaissle's Newcastle the warning is efficiency versus chance creation. Possession and a late Ramsey finish papered over an attack that generated only 0.65 xG at home.
