Clearlake Capital Takes Full Control of Chelsea: Boehly and Walter Exit Ownership Group

Chelsea Football Club has completed a significant ownership transition, with Clearlake Capital acquiring full control of the Premier League club. Todd Boehly and Mark Walter have sold their stakes, marking the end of the shared ownership structure that began with the club's £4.25bn takeover in 2022.

The US private equity firm will now control 99.9% of Chelsea, bringing definitive closure to the consortium-era governance. Hansjörg Wyss will remain as an important stakeholder and partner in the ownership group, maintaining some continuity from the previous structure.

Financial Scale of the Transition

While official financial terms were not disclosed, industry sources indicate Clearlake paid approaching £1bn for the combined stakes of Boehly and Walter, which represented approximately 25% of the club. This valuation aligns with the club's overall estimated worth of around £5bn, including debt considerations.

The transaction reflects the complex financial reality Chelsea faces. Despite revenue reaching £490.9m in the 2024/25 season, the club reported a £262.4m pre-tax loss - the largest ever recorded by a Premier League club. This substantial investment in playing squad development, infrastructure, and overall football operations has yet to translate into on-pitch success.

Operational Continuity Amidst Change

Chelsea has emphasized that there will be no changes to day-to-day operations, leadership, or club strategy following the ownership transition. The men's team, currently competing without European football this season after finishing 10th in the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, has won two of its first four games in the 2026/27 season.

It has been an honour to serve as chairman of Chelsea Football Club. I would like to thank the many who helped secure a bright future for the club, including the English Premier League, the coaches and players, the talented leadership and staff at Chelsea, and the legions of dedicated fans.Todd Boehly, former Chelsea chairman, in official club statement

Boehly will step down as chairman after four years at the club, a tenure marked by bold transfer strategies, ticketing controversies, and ambitious infrastructure projects. His departure signals a new chapter for Chelsea under Clearlake's sole stewardship.

Commercial Progress and Future Focus

Despite the financial challenges, there have been positive developments on the commercial front. Chelsea recently named Circle Internet Group as its principal and front-of-shirt partner for the 2026/27 season, demonstrating continued commercial appeal.

Clearlake's statement emphasized their commitment to continuing investment in the club's infrastructure, sporting performance, player development, and delivering long-term success for Chelsea and its supporters. The focus now shifts to improving Premier League performance without the benefit of European competition revenues.

Todd has been an important partner throughout our ownership of Chelsea, and we thank him for his time and contribution as Chairman. He will always be a part of the Chelsea story and family. Clearlake has served as Chelsea's majority owner since 2022, and as we move to full control our focus is to continue investing in the Club's infrastructure, sporting performance, player development and delivering long-term success for Chelsea and the Club's supporters.Clearlake Capital founders, official statement

The ownership transition comes after reports of a rift within the ownership group that emerged in 2024, leading both sides to explore buying each other out. The eventual resolution sees Clearlake consolidating control and moving forward with a unified vision for the club's future.
