The first 45 minutes gave Diego Simeone almost nothing to fear and Athletic almost nothing on the scoreboard. Lee Kang-In was booked in the 39th minute. Then the second half started and San Mamés detonated.
Nico Williams headed Athletic in front in the 46th minute. Two minutes later Iñaki Williams found Navarro, who cut inside and finished. Atlético were 2-0 down before they had even reset the shape. Ernesto Terzic had already been forced into a half-time change, Aitor Paredes on for Yeray Álvarez.
Simeone emptied the bench around the hour. Ademola Lookman, Morten Hjulmand, Lee Kang-In and Giuliano Simeone all went off, with Julián Álvarez and Koke among those arriving. Athletic kept the door shut. Sancet, who started in the 4-2-3-1, scored in the 90th minute to make it 3-0.
Why it matters
Athletic climb to seventh with six points from four matches after a WLL start. Atlético sit sixth on seven points after arriving as a WDW side. Possession finished 62-38 to the visitors. Shots were 14-10 to Atlético, who also won the corners 7-3. Big chances were 2-0 to Athletic. Expected goals landed at 1.12 to 0.84. That is the whole story: more of the ball, fewer of the moments that count.
