Rodri starts for Barcelona for the first time since leaving City

Rodri has started for Barcelona for the first time since joining from Manchester City, and it changes the midfield picture.

Fabrizio Romano posted the confirmation on Sunday afternoon: Rodri starts for the first time since the move from the Premier League champions. The Spain midfielder arrived in Catalonia after his City chapter and had not begun a competitive match in a Barcelona shirt until this fixture.

That is a hard selection call, not a rumour. A player of Rodri’s profile does not slide into a first start unnoticed. Barcelona’s midfield has been rebuilt around control and recovery, and naming him from the first whistle is the clearest signal yet that Hansi Flick is ready to use him as a starter rather than a late introduction.

What to watch for

A Rodri start is a reason to watch Barcelona live rather than skim highlights later. The questions are how the former City anchor sits in Flick’s structure: how high he receives, who partners him, and whether the press still jumps when he drops between the centre-backs.

The transfer itself is closed. The question now is usage. City sold a midfielder who defined their build-up. Barcelona are now asking him to do the same job in a different league, on a different grass, under a different coach. A first start is the moment that question stops being theoretical.

No fresh injury bulletin was attached to Romano’s note. The news is the XI, not a medical update. Flick had already managed minutes for other attackers this week, including a separate training-ground check on Lamine Yamal, but Rodri’s inclusion is a midfield decision rather than a fitness story.
