Enzo Fernández starts for City after O’Reilly issue in the warm-up

The Manchester City team sheet was not the one Enzo Maresca planned at the start of the warm-up. Enzo Fernández started. Nico O’Reilly did not. Fabrizio Romano reported the Argentina midfielder went straight into the XI after O’Reilly suffered a physical issue before kick-off.

City beat Coventry 1-0, Erling Haaland scored again, and Fernández and Iliman Ndiaye both appeared. The O’Reilly-to-Fernández change was the late selection story.

Maresca on midfield options

After the win, Maresca was asked about City’s midfield depth. “If you want to be there competing, you need options,” he said, in quotes carried by Romano. “Arsenal have options, we have options, more teams have options. Not just us. I'm very happy with the options we have.”

The warm-up problem made the point in real time. O’Reilly had been expected to feature. Fernández, a recent arrival, was on the bench in early team-news notes from The Athletic and then promoted when the session on the grass did not hold. That is the kind of late change that turns a static XI graphic into a different game.

City’s next Premier League match will be watched for whether O’Reilly returns and whether Fernández keeps the shirt he inherited in an emergency. There is no confirmed public diagnosis beyond the physical issue described on Saturday, and nothing further has been confirmed until the club issues another bulletin.
