Premier League Injury Crisis: Chelsea Hit Hard as Pedro, Caicedo Face Fitness Battles
The Premier League's first international break is approaching, but several clubs are dealing with significant injury concerns that could impact their final matches before the pause. Chelsea appear to be the hardest hit, with multiple key players facing uncertainty ahead of their Friday night clash with Brentford.
Chelsea's Mounting Injury Problems
Joao Pedro, who has been in excellent form with three goals in four Premier League games this season, is now a major doubt for the Brentford match. The Brazilian forward was withdrawn from the Brazil national team squad due to a knee injury sustained during Chelsea's 2-2 draw with Hull City last weekend. Manager Xabi Alonso confirmed that Pedro played the full 90 minutes in that match but has since developed knee discomfort that requires further assessment.
The situation with Moises Caicedo is equally concerning. The midfielder, who joined Chelsea in a club-record deal, has struggled with injury issues since his arrival. After making a brief return against Brighton last month, Caicedo lasted just 13 minutes before being forced off with another injury setback. Alonso has taken a cautious approach, stating: "Not yet..." when asked if Caicedo would be available for the Brentford game, indicating the club won't risk the midfielder until he's fully fit.
Reece James, Chelsea's influential right-back, also remains a doubt for Friday's encounter. The England international has been managing a long-standing injury issue and his availability continues to be monitored on a game-by-game basis.
Tottenham's Continuing Struggles
Spurs' winless start to the Premier League season has been compounded by injury issues. Pedro Porro is expected to return to the starting lineup after a period out, providing a much-needed boost at right-back. However, the news isn't all positive for Ange Postecoglou's side.
Sandro Tonali missed Tuesday's Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool after sustaining an unspecified knock, and his availability for the weekend remains uncertain. Dejan Kulusevski, who has been working his way back to full fitness, has not been training consistently with the first team according to manager Roberto De Zerbi, suggesting his return may take longer than initially hoped.
The most significant absence for Tottenham is Mykhailo Mudryk, who is expected to be sidelined for 6-8 weeks with an injury sustained in training. The Ukrainian winger, who joined Spurs from Shakhtar Donetsk, will miss crucial matches including the North London derby and games against parent club Chelsea and Crystal Palace.
Hull City's Defensive Concerns
Newly-promoted Hull City, preparing for their match against Newcastle, have several defensive concerns. Matt Targett twisted his ankle in training two days ago and is now questionable for the game. Nobel Mendy is in concussion protocol and will miss at least seven days, ruling him out of the Newcastle clash. Hidemasa Morita remains sidelined and is not expected to return until after the first week of the international break.
Newcastle have their own injury worry with Anthony Elanga. The Swedish winger, who had a bright start to the season, is heading for an MRI scan after being excluded from the matchday squad in their previous game. Manager Matthias Jaissle expressed hope that the issue isn't serious but acknowledged the concern given Elanga's importance to the squad.
As the Premier League approaches its first international break, managers will be hoping that the pause allows their injured players to recover. For Chelsea, Tottenham, and Hull City, the next few days will be crucial in determining which players will be available for their final matches before the break.
