Deloitte: Relegated Premier League Clubs' Transfer Receipts Surge 123% in 2025/26
Transfer receipts from sales by the sides relegated from the Premier League to the Championship for the 2025/26 season increased by an unprecedented 123%, rising from £100 million in 2024 to £225 million in 2025, according to a new report from the Deloitte Sports Business Group.
Premier League Dominates European Spending
The report also highlights that Premier League clubs' spending outstripped that seen across the rest of the 'big five' European leagues, accounting for 51% of total spend among this elite group. This represents a 5-point increase on the average for the previous five summer transfer windows, which stood at 46%.
Tim Bridge, lead partner in the Deloitte Sports Business Group, commented: "A third record-breaking summer of Premier League spending in four years sends a strong signal that, despite subdued spending across the rest of the continent, clubs have no plans to slow down their investment in the on-pitch product."
"With more English teams than ever competing in European competitions—more than any other league across Europe—Premier League clubs are looking to attract the best talent and further cement the league as the most competitive in world football."
Financial Sustainability Remains Key
Bridge added: "However, financial sustainability should still be at the heart of all business to encourage the long-term success of any football club. There continues to be a complex regulatory landscape from both domestic and European governing bodies."
The 2025 summer transfer window saw Premier League clubs spend a record £3.0 billion, according to Deloitte's analysis, maintaining the league's position as the world's most financially powerful football competition.
Industry Implications
The dramatic increase in transfer receipts from relegated clubs demonstrates the growing financial value of Premier League status. Even clubs moving down to the Championship are now generating significant revenue from player sales, reflecting the league's overall financial strength and the premium placed on Premier League-proven talent.
This trend underscores the importance of strategic player trading and squad management for clubs at all levels of English football, as well as the increasing commercialization of the sport's financial ecosystem.
