Il campionato
Italy's top flight since 1929, home to the scudetto race, with Juventus the most successful club on 36 titles.
Serie A is Italy's top football division, tracing its roots to national championships first contested in the late 19th century and taking its modern single round-robin format from 1929. Twenty clubs play a 38-match season, split into two rounds of home and away fixtures, with the champion awarded the scudetto, a small tricolour shield worn on the winning club's shirt the following season. The competition is historically associated with tactical discipline and defensive organisation, though recent seasons have also produced high-scoring, attacking football from its leading sides. Juventus stands as the league's most successful club, with Inter Milan and AC Milan among the other historic giants, alongside Napoli, Roma and Fiorentina, all of whom carry deep regional followings. Fixtures such as the Derby della Madonnina between Inter and Milan and the Derby d'Italia between Juventus and Inter are among the most closely watched matches in Italian sport. The top four teams qualify for the Champions League, with further places available for the Europa League and Conference League, while the bottom three clubs are relegated to Serie B. For fans tracking live scores and standings, Serie A offers a long, tactically rich season where the title race and the fight to avoid relegation are followed with equal intensity across the country.
